Ba Chua Xu Festival - An Giang

As usual in April of the lunar calendar, locals in Chau Doc District, An Giang Province in southern Vietnam and others in provinces nationwide go on a pilgrimage to Sam Mountain to worship Ba Chua Xu (Lady of the Region).
According to legend, nearly 200 years ago Sam Mountain was desolate, bushy and thinly populated. It was the home of many wild beasts. At that time, the invaders often pestered the life of locals here. One day, a squad of invaders climbed up Sam Mountain and found a beautiful stone lady statue. They wanted to take the statue but could not move it. In anger, they disfigured the statue, breaking off the left hand.

Shortly after, a little girl who had been playing joyfully in the village started shaking uncontrollably and began very flush. She called herself as Chua Xu Thanh Mau (Lady of the Region) and said that the statue of the Lady on Sam Mountain was destroyed by the invaders so the villagers should take the sculpture down from the mountain. When the villagers climbed up the mountain they were very surprised when seeing the statue.
They selected nine girls to carry the statue. When arriving at the foot of Sam Mountain, the statue became so heavy that the girls were forced to place it on the ground. The village elders understood this as a signal from the statue that this was the place that it wanted to remain so a ceremony was held and a shrine was built on the spot to dedicate to her. That day was the 25th day of lunar April. Since then, the locals usually hold the Lady worshipping ceremony. At present, on Sam Mountain still remains a vestige of a stone platform where the statue was located.

The Lady Shrine was initially built from bamboo and it was rebuilt in 1870. In 1972, the Shrine was again rebuilt but much larger than before. The architecture of the Shrine has the shape of Chinese script “nation” with a lotus-shaped tower and three-layer roof that is curved like the bow of the boat. The Shrine is roofed with blue tiles. The patterns and designs on the sanctum feature Indian art. Above are strong and beautiful genie statues using their hands to prop up the beams that were carved and engraved finely and sophisticatedly. The Shrine also boasts many red-lacquered panels and couplets. Particularly, the wall behind the statue and four ancient columns have been kept intact.

The statue bears the Oc Eo Culture with the fine arts motifs of the Ba La Mon (Brhmanes) religion originating from India, similar to the four-hand statue in Linh Son Pagoda in Oc Eo Township , Thoai Son District, An Giang Province.

At present, all rites of the festival are held solemnly. At midnight on the 23rd day and in the early morning of the 24th day of lunar April, the statue-bathing rite is carried out for nearly one hour by four or five prestigious middle-aged women in the village. They bathe the statue in water fragranced with jasmine, spray it with perfume and then adorn the statue with a new bonnet and gown. Although the ceremony is held behind a silk curtain, it attracts the participation of thousands people who stand outside the sanctum.

On the night of the 25th day of lunar April and in the early morning of the 26th day, Tuc Yet and Xay Chau, the major rites of the festival, are carried out.  At midnight, the Tuc Yet rite is performed by the main priest and four nobles. The offerings include a white pig, a plate of pig’s blood, a tray of steamed sticky rice, a tray of five-fruits, etc. To the ceremonial music and drum and gong beats, the main priest and four nobles offer the Lady incense, wine and tea and read sermons.
After the Tuc Yen rite is the Xay Chau rite. The main priest drips a branch of poplar in a water bowl and splashes the water while reading “first, praying to heaven for good things; second, praying to the land for a bumper crop; third, praying for mankind's longevity; fourth, praying for annihilating demons”. When he finishes the rite, he beats three salvos of drumbeats to begin the Hat boi (classical opera) performance on the stage before the central sanctum. At 4am on the 27th day of lunar April, the Chanh Te rite is held, but is less spectacular.

Ba Chua Xu Worshipping Festival has become a great cultural event in Southern Vietnam that annually attracts about 2 million tourists nationwide who hope to ask for blessings and witness a typical cultural feature in An Giang Province.

Thu Le's ancient village

The ancient village of Thu Le is located near Tam Giang Lagoon in Quang Phuoc Commune, Quang Dien District. It was established during the middle of the Le Dynasty (1428-1788). For over half a century, the village has preserved many cultural features of a village in the old capital of Hue.
Translated from the Chinese, the name “Thu le” means “giu le”, (literally keeping politeness and rites), which shows that the villagers attach much importance to maintaining their rites, customs and disciplines. Thu Le is an agricultural village but it is famous for such cultural works as pagodas and communal houses.
It is also famous for Ngu Hanh Temple built to worship Princess Huyen Tran during the Tran Dynasty (1225-1400) who followed her husband to reclaim new lands in the South. There is also Van Thanh Temple to worship Khong Tu and Vo Thanh Temple to worship Quangong.

According to the village’s custom, each large family together with the authorities and villagers, take responsibility for organizing worshipping rites during the year.
Along the village’s main road, many family worshipping houses are scattered. Each is not only a beautiful architectural work but they also preserve the cultural and historical imprints of a family. The village also boasts an ancient pagoda with a grand three-gate entrance. The main hall was built in the style of a long Ruong house, a strange architecture rarely seen in Hue. The roof of the pagoda was terracotta inlayed with different shapes of dragons, unicorns, tortoises and phoenixes.

On the main four doors, artisans created four-season paintings and eight beautiful objects with five bats holding in their mouths the Chinese script “Tho”, symbolizing five good fortunes. For a long time, Thu Le Village’s pagoda has been the place for organizing religious activities and is a charming destination for tourists nationwide.

Come to Swallow Island in spring, people will have a chance to see flocks of swallow flying crowdedly in the sky and chirping to call each other. This kind of bird lives in flock but usually live in a couple.
Swallow Island in Binh Dinh
According to document of researchers, there are two main types of swallow in the Quy Nhon Swallow Island: yen co (yến cỏ) và yen sao (yến sào). Yen co is bigger than yen sao, build their nests by using grass, junk from top of mountain. Yen sao is specious one which has small bodies like sparrow but flies strongly. They find the food by flying as well as catching the food on sea; they can fly continuously in ten hours without stopping.
The nests of yen sao are not made of grass but their saliva; each day they generate a little of saliva, pull this to make threads, crank threads to form nests. After a period, the nests are dry, looks like ears sticking to cave ceiling and cliffs. When finishing the nests to fit the body entirely, swallow starts to breed.
Visit Swallow Island, besides contemplating the charming scenery outside, tourists can also go further inside the cave to enjoy the majestic beauty created by the nature. On the cliffs, interfering with water drops, there are tiny white points; the scene looks like a summer night sky having a plenty of stars. The swallow nests are arranged tightly, making a long string; somewhere the swallows spread their wings and blow their breath to warm their children; sometimes there is a voice of young birds calling mothers to feed. The sound of waves, water dropping, wings flapping, swallow voice… all mix together, making up a strange rhythm that lets people feel like they are lost in a fairy place.

Ta Gu Waterfall - the Fairy Smooth Hair

Fascinated by the beautiful stream, the fairies from the sky usually flied down bathing in the stream then went to the mountain top spreading their hair feeling the wind. One day, the smallest fairy busies herself with playing, forgot the restricted time so she had to stay at the human world, finally she became Ta Gu Waterfall.

Ta Gu Waterfall is one of famous tourism destinations in Nha Trang, located in Son Hiep commune, Khanh Son district, Khanh Hoa province. From the centre of Khanh Son district following the opposite direction 15 km further, there is Son Hiep commune. Reach there, visitors can easily recognize the majestic mountains which are about 1,300 m higher than sea level, the pure air in the mountainous region.
Ta Gu Waterfall _ the Fairy Smooth Hair
Formerly, the waterfall was named Nga waterfall. After that, people changed its name into Ta Gu, the name of the spring flowing to the waterfall.
There are two myths about the waterfall formation. Anciently, there were many pythons in this forest; one was as big as a-hundred-year-old To Hap tree. In a morning of dry season, a flock of pythons went to the top finding food. On the way, they met a small elephant losing its mother which was bewildered. Immediately, the leading python run to hurl the elephant down. The elephant and the pythons fought fiercely. Finally, both two animals fell into the abyss. When the mother elephant came back finding her child dead, she stood on the mountain top crying nights and days, then she turned to rock. Two flows of the mother’s teardrop became two flows of waterfall.
Ta Gu Waterfall _ the Fairy Smooth Hair
According to another myth, Ta Gu anciently was a transparent, pure stream. Every year in spring, animals bustlingly took part in a festival.
Ta Gu Waterfall _ the Fairy Smooth Hair
However, in both two myths, Ta Gu waterfall was beautiful, mysterious, majestic with two flows rumblingly pouring from the height of 30-40m, and blue lake which is about 1km wide.
Especially, despites of being one of the most famous tourism destinations in Nha Trang, the waterfall still remains its wild scenery, being an ideal destination for visitors who are keen on adventure.
The charm of the waterfall is created by not only the beautiful landscape but also forest and stream crossing travel during the way to the waterfall. It’s so interesting that after reaching the waterfall, the adventure still continues. Firstly, people must hold the tree roots to go down, pass a stream, then meet a deep and large lake. After that, they continue to cross the slippery stream in the top right, crowd to the canopies of wild plants keeping moving to the bottom of the waterfall.
Ta Gu Waterfall _ the Fairy Smooth Hair
There is an extremely excited feeling when stopping near straight cliff, facing with the wonderful waterfall which is rumblingly flowing. All tiredness seems to be left out in the cold water of the wide lake in the waterfall bottom. It will be more interesting to hold a camping party among the mountainous area to connect members in group.
