The Nguyen Dynasty (1802-1945) is the last of the Vietnamese dynasties. In total, there were 13 emperors, only seven of which had tombs however: Gia Long, Minh Mang, Thieu Tri, Tu Duc, Duc Duc, Dong Khanh and Khai Dinh.
The seven imperial tombs are located in a hilly region southwest of the Citadel. The tombs of Minh Mang, Tu Duc, Dong Khanh and Khai Dinh belong to the major touristic destinations in Hue city.
Each of the tombs was constructed during the reign of the emperor it was named after. All the tombs are equipped with statues and monuments in perfect Feng Shui harmony to create a natural setting, in the architecture of which the respective emperor's philosophical tendencies are often reflected.
The general elements incorporated in all the tombs are: walls, triple gate (Tam Quan Gate), Salutation Court, Stele House, temples, lakes and ponds, pavilions, gardens, and finally the tomb.

3. Phu Quoc Island

Phu Quoc is part of the southern province of Kien Giang province. The island is 50 km long (from north to south) and 25 km wide (from east to west at its widest part).
Surrounded by more than 40 km of white beaches decorated with coconut palms, Phu Quoc is Vietnam’s largest island. Its western coastline is sparsely populated while the interior is largely covered with jungle and mainly deserted.
A stay on Phu Quoc Island would not be complete without visiting one of the factories producing nuoc mam (fish sauce), one of the most popular ingredients of the Vietnamese cooking as well as one of the pearl farms with panels describing the formation of pearls and shops selling pearl jewelry.
The island has a unique species of dogs, the Phu Quoc ridgeback, which has a ridge of hair that runs along its back in the opposite direction to the rest of the coast. Much of this island’s nature is still protected.
Around 70 percent of the island, an area of 31,422 hectares, became a national park in 2001. The rainy season on Phu Quoc is from July to November and the peak season for tourism is midwinter, when the sky is blue and the sea is calm.

4. The Mekong Delta

The Mekong Delta is the region in southwestern Vietnam where the Mekong River approaches and empties into the sea through a network of distributaries.
The Mekong delta region encompasses a large portion of southwestern Vietnam of 39,000 square kilometers. It has recently been dubbed as a 'biological treasure trove.' Over 10,000 new species have been discovered in previously unexplored areas of Mekong Delta.
The region lies immediately to the west of Ho Chi Minh City, roughly forming a triangle stretching from My Tho in the east to Chau Doc and Ha Tien in the northwest, down to Ca Mau and the East Sea at the southernmost tip of Vietnam.
It displays a variety of physical landscapes, ranging from mountains and highlands to the north and west to broad, flat flood plains in the south.
This diversity of terrain was largely the product of tectonic uplift and folding brought about by the collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates about 50 million years ago.
The soil of the Mekong River basin consists mainly of sediment, deposited over thousands of years as the river changed its course due to the flatness of the low-lying terrain.
Coming to the delta, visitors will discover the daily life of local people and diverse landscape.

5. Tram Ton Pass (Heaven Gate)

Tram Ton Pass is Vietnam’s highest mountain pass. On a clear day, the view is spectacular.
Don’t be deterred by mist in Sapa. Conditions on the pass are frequently different to those in town. The temperature can also rise quite a bit on the pass as you break away from the cooler air of Sapa.
Thach Bac (Silver) waterfalls are a compulsory stop for local tour groups and can be pretty busy. The falls are beautiful but probably only warrant a visit if time permits and in conjunction with a visit to Tram Ton Pass 3km further along the road.

6. Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park

Phong Nha-Ke Bang is a national park and UNESCO World Heritage Site in the central province of Quang Binh, about 500 km south of Hanoi.
The park is noted for its cave and grotto systems as it is composed of 300 caves and grottos with a total length of about 70 km, of which only 20 have been surveyed by Vietnamese and British scientists; 17 of these are located in the Phong Nha area and three in the Ke Bang area.
After April 2009, the total length of caves and grottoes is 126 km. Before the discovery of Son Doong Cave, Phong Nha held several world cave records, as it has the longest underground river, as well as the largest caverns and passageways.
The park derives its name from Phong Nha Cave, containing many fascinating rock formations, and Ke Bang forest. The plateau on which the park is situated is probably one of the finest and most distinctive examples of a complex karst landform in Southeast Asia.
This national park was listed in UNESCO's World Heritage Sites in 2003 for its geological values. The world's largest cave, was discovered by a team of British cave explorers in April 2009.

7. Ha Long Bay

Halong Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a popular travel destination, located in Quang Ninh province. The bay features thousands of limestone karsts and isles in various sizes and shapes.
Ha Long Bay has an area of around 1,553 km2, including 1,960–2,000 islets, most of which are limestone. The core of the bay has an area of 334 km2 with a high density of 775 islets.
The limestone in this bay has gone through 500 million years of formation in different conditions and environments. The evolution of the karst there has taken 20 million years under the impact of the tropical wet climate.
The geo-diversity of the environment in the area has created biodiversity, including a tropical evergreen biosystem, oceanic and sea shore biosystem. Ha Long Bay is home to 14 endemic floral species and 60 endemic faunal species.
Historical research surveys have shown the presence of prehistorical human beings in this area tens of thousands years ago.
The successive ancient cultures are the Soi Nhu culture around 18,000–7,000 BC, the Cai Beo culture 7,000–5,000 BC and the Ha Long culture 5,000–3,500 years ago.
Halong Bay also marked important events in the history of Vietnam with many artifacts found in Bai Tho Mout, Dau Go Cave and Bai Chay.
In 1994, the core zone of Ha Long Bay was listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, and listed for a second time.

8. One-pillar pagoda

One Pillar Pagoda is a historic Buddhist temple in Hanoi. It is regarded alongside Perfume Pagoda, as one of Vietnam's two most iconic places of worship.
The pagoda was built by King Ly Thai Tong, who ruled from 1028 to 1054. According to the court records, the king was childless and dreamt that he met the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, who handed him a baby son while seated on a lotus flower.
The King then married a peasant girl that he had met and she bore him a son. He constructed the pagoda in gratitude for this in 1049 by erecting a pillar in the middle of a lotus pond, similar to the one he saw in the dream.
The structure was built of wood on a single stone pillar 1.25 m in diameter, and it was designed to resemble a lotus blossom, which is a Buddhist symbol of purity, since a lotus blossoms in a muddy pond.
In 1954, the French Union forces destroyed the pagoda before withdrawing from Vietnam, it was rebuilt afterwards.

9. Da Dia Rapids

Da Dia (Stone Plate) Rapids are located in Tuy An District, the south central province of Phu Yen.
With strange rock formations, foamy rapids, a fissure with multi-colored fish and a deep cave, Da Dia Rapids was listed as a National Heritage Site by the former Ministry of Culture and Information, now the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
Da Dia Rapids is a baffling and beautiful riddle of nature, and set in stone for all time. It’s like a giant jigsaw, irritatingly made of the same shaped pieces, and forming a solidified structure that has proved more than just a curiosity for thousands.
The stones in Da Dia Rapids are bazan stones of dark black and light yellow. There are stones of different sizes with different shapes such as round, pentagon, and polygon and so on.
In the middle of the rapids, there is a small fissure filled with rain and sea water. In this fissure, rocks stick out at odd angles. Hence, when travelling to this area, visitors can also enjoy the fresh air and refresh after a long drive.
Visiting Da Dia Rapids – you will have the chance to learn about many species of marine creatures, especially jam seaweeds.

10. Hue ancient capital

On December 11, 1993, UNESCO recognized the architectural ensemble of Hue as a World Cultural Heritage site.
That was the first time a Vietnamese city had ever received such a title. Hue was the capital of the Nguyen Dynasty (1802-1945), the final feudal regime of Vietnam.
Situated 638 km to the south of Hanoi, only with 6,777 hectares in area and 280,000 in population, this historical ancient capital has become one cultural and tourism center of Vietnam and the world.
The most amazing thing about Hue is the blend of royal-folk architecture and romantic nature.
This romance is all evident in the beauty of the Huong River, Ngu Mountain, chanties and folklore songs, ancient citadels, palaces, temples, pagodas, ancient garden houses, special cuisine only found in Hue, court music and dancing, Hue chanties on the Huong (Perfume) River and especially in the souls of the people here.
Beautiful nature, ancient architecture, and elegant people are combined together to make Hue a heaven of poems, music and paintings, and a World Heritage site that serves as an everlasting inspiration for generations of artists.

MUONG ETHNIC GROUP CULTURAL SPACE MUSEUM IN HOA BINH

7 kilometers from Hòa Bình city center and 70 kilometers north of Hanoi stands the Muong Ethnic Group Cultural Space Museum, the first private museum in Hoa Binh province, and the only museum in Vietnam devoted to Muong culture.
The first thing visitors see is water spilling over rock formation into a stream flanked by rice mortars, a reflection of the unique cultural identity of the Muong people.
The centuries-old Muong culture is captured in two sections: a reenactment section and a display section. The reenactment section contains 4 Muong stilt houses that illustrate the social stratification of feudal society.

The Muong houses are differentiated by social status - the “Lang” house for the most powerful families, the “Âu” house for the mandarins, the “Tạo” house for ordinary people, and the “Nõ” house for the lowest class, such as widows and orphans.
Further on are display rooms which showcase traditional Muong handicrafts such as knitted woven and embroidered fabrics, tools for hunting and farming, and items used in festivals, traditional observances, and religious practice. Visitor Ngô Thu Nga from Hanoi told VOV: "I am grateful for the initiative, love of Muong culture, and effort that created these displays and this museum."

The museum was founded by a painter born and raised in Hanoi, whose heart belongs to the Muong culture. A gratitude of the Hanoi University of Industrial Fine Arts and the Hanoi University of Fine Art, Vũ Đức Hiếu travelled widely collecting artifacts, researching the Muong culture, and seeking a suitable venue for the museum.

His initiative to create the Muong Ethnic Group Cultural Space Museum was enthusiastically supported by the Hoa Binh provincial Department of Culture and Sports, administrators at all levels, and the Muong people. After ten years of planning and a year of construction, the 2-hectare museum officially opened on December 16th, 2007.
It not only reflects Muong life and culture, it also hosts community art performances. The director of the museum, painter Vũ Đức Hiếu, says: "The museum presents Muong society through artifacts and actual ethnic minority people who live and work right here. We hope the reenactment and display will give visitors a better understanding of Muong people’s life and culture."

Kenh Ga Floating Village in the Red River Delta- Ninh Binh Vietnam

Located not far from Hoa Lu ancient capital of Vietnam, Kenh Ga Floating Village is known as one of the most rural areas in the Red River Delta. The village s a remarkable place where tourists in Vietnam travel can see its inhabitants’ life on the river with their own eyes.
Lying not far from Hoa Lu ancient capital is the small fishing village of Kenh Ga. The name actually means Chicken Canal and is derived from a local hot spring which water is used to soak chickens to make it easier to pluck their feathers.
Kenh Ga, set on the banks of the Hoang Long River, is a remarkable place, not only because it is surrounded by the same massive rocks that dominate Hoa Lu, but also because for most of the year the entire community lives on the water itself. The floating village of Kenh Ga receives relatively few visitors compared to nearby Hoa Lu and the peoples' aquatic way of life has changed little over the centuries.
Travel to Kenh Ga Floating Village, Ninh Binh
The area is known as one of the most rural area in the Red River Delta. It offers a combination of countryside landscapes, traditional rural lifestyle and well-known friendly local folk. Touring the area would be really relaxing and fascinating as you are seated in a rowed-by-feet boat with scenes of people fishing, children rowing boats to school, simple houses clinging to limestone cliffs, etc along the canal.
The traditional lifestyle of the river folk in this area is unique, and the trip will present you with countless sights of the old Viet Nam.
The principal reason for its lack of visitors joining tours in Vietnam coming here is that the village is accessible only by boat. Gliding along the river and canals, weaving one's way through the boathouses and fishing vessels of Kenh Ga is a unique experience for there is no other place in Vietnam that combines the stunning backdrop of the limestone cliffs with an authentic floating village.
The village of Kenh Ga (Chicken Canal) gets its name apparently from the number of wild chickens that used to live in the area. It's essentially a floating village on the Hoang Long River, with just a few permanent buildings on the riverbanks. About the only other place in Vietnam where you can see anything like this is in the Mekong Delta. On the other hand, nowhere in the Mekong Delta will you find a stunning mountain backdrop like the one at Kenh Ga. Another difference: people in Kenh Ga row boats with their feet, leaning back and watching the world go by.

It's a lovely area, and one of the best places in northern Vietnam to see river life. People here seem to spend most of their lives floating on water: at their floating fish-breeding pens, harvesting river grass to feed the fish, trawling in the muddy shallows for shellfish or selling veggies boat-to-boat. Even the children commute to school by boat.
From the pier you can hire a motorboat to take you for an hour or so touring around the village. The boat trips are organized through the local government tourism agency and, thankfully, they've managed to keep the operation relatively low-key and hassle-free. How much longer can it last?
When visiting Kenh Ga or Chicken Canal Floating Village, tourists in Vietnam travel are all warmly welcomed here because the locals are very friendly and hospitable. The children gleefully shout "tay oi" (Westerner) at every tourist they see, even Vietnamese tourists!

CULTURE IN ETHNIC GROUPS

Ethnic groups across the country will gather for a spring festival from February 18 to 22 to highlight their cultural identities.

Through performances and other activities, representatives from 16 ethnic groups would help revive traditional rituals and folk games to promote understanding about ethnic cultures, said the festival organisers from the Cultural Tourism Village of Vietnamese Ethnic Groups - Vietnam travel agency.

Tourists will have the opportunity to watch ethnic people prepare their traditional dishes in the culinary section of the festival, which is on opening day from 9am.

Pa Then and Mong representatives from the northern mountainous Ha Giang Province will present their traditional festivals, the fire dance and Gau Tao tomorrow.

“The Gau Tao festival is the most typical festival of Mong people. It is held after the second day of the new year,” said Ho Viet Son, director of the provincial cultural centre.

“We will bring the Gau Tao festival to tourists to enjoy on spring days. There will also be pan-pipe dancing and folklore songs performed.”

The Pa Then people often organise the fire dance festival which is often held when the traditional Tet holidayis over.

The fire dance festival has rituals, such as when the shaman ends the sacrificial part and conjures up a dead person’s soul to access a boy’s body. At this point 12 boys begin dancing on hot coals.

“To Pa Then people, the fire dance involves the whole community, thus everyone has fun on this occasion,” Son said.

From the Central Highland province of Dak Lak, Gia Lai, E De and Mo Nong artisans will demonstrate brocade weaving and rattan products.

They will also perform wind instruments and folklore songs. Plus, a ceremony praying for good health will be revived.

Nguyen Thi Thanh Huong, head of Dam Sam College, said: “We will introduce Central Highlands traditional dishes, like nhip leaf; rattan browse and lo o tree-tube rice.”

On Wednesday, the neu tree will be taken down in a ceremony expected to welcome the participation of State leaders.

Nguyen Duc Thang, an official from the Cultural Tourism Village of Vietnamese Ethnic Groups, said the new year’s tree was set up as a symbol for safety on the 23rd day of lunar December and taken down on the 7th of lunar January.

“The tree is considered a bridge for the gods and forefathers’ spirits to travel between Heaven and Earth. Tet will end after the neu is taken down and people will be ready to go back to work,” Thang said.

Folklore games and sports activities will be held during the four-day festival. In a common house, each ethnic groups will decorate their traditional houses and welcome tourists with Tet customs by singing and dancing.

The spring festival will mark the opening of the 2013 programme at the Cultural Tourism Village of Vietnamese Ethnic Groups.

The ethnic groups involved in the festival include Tay, Pa Then, La Ha, Mong, Lo Lo, Co Lao, Nung, E De and Gia Lai from the northern mountainous provinces of Ha Giang, Son La, Hoa Binh, Bac Giang and Lang Son; the central province of Thanh Hoa; the Tay Nguyen (Central Highlands) province of Dak Lak; and the central province of Ninh Thuan.

WHEN WILL VIETNAM HAVE NATIONAL COSTUMES?

In order to speed up the selection of Vietnam’s national ceremonial costumes, the Ministry of Culture and Sports and Tourism has assigned the Department of Fine Arts, Photography and Exhibition to quickly find suitable samples.

It is quite clear that the ao dai will be the national dress of Vietnamese women. The agency has launched the competition on designing national ceremonial dress. It will also organize at least two workshops in the central and southern regions to collect opinions on the issue, with the participation of leading experts in the fields of history, art and culture.

A number of specific agencies such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Office of the President and the Office of the National Assembly will be invited to contribute to the project.

There have been many conferences on selecting Vietnam’s national costumes, but so far there is no official decision has been made. At the end of 2012, a workshop entitled “Vietnamese ceremonial dresses – criteria of selection” was held in Hanoi.

Lots of ideas and presentations were given by experts and researchers. Many issues were raised in this workshop, among which the idea of choosing ao dai for women and ready-to-wear turban and ao dai for men were supported by most of the participants. When will this task finish?

The most controversial issue today is the formal dress for men. Since early 90′s, the selection of national dresses has been discussed at many state-level meetings and many fashion design competitions have been held but the final decision has not been made.

Although there are concerns, many officials, researchers, experts, diplomats have confirmed that Vietnam needs to have its official national dresses. To be sure, Vietnam will have national dresses to reflect the cultural identity of Vietnam to international friends. But the problem now is the disagreement in choosing which dresses will be the national dresses.

It is quite clear that the ao dai will be the national dress of Vietnamese women because it is distinctive costume of Vietnam, which cannot be mixed with others. The most controversial issue today is the formal dress for men.

Ms. Doan Thi Thu Huong, deputy director of the Department of Fine Arts, Photography and Exhibition, said after gathering ideas, the department will introduce the criteria and requirements for a national contest on designing national dresses. The best designs will be submitted to the Government for approval before they are awarded and used.
